Instruction video for building a shamanic drum part 2 text

Lacing and how to create a handle on my drum

We created the lacing on the drum using video 1.

We created loops in the holes and made bindings.

The long cord you have left over is number 16 in the lacing.

1:18

We are going to use the long cord to create a handle. Pay close attention to the loose string. We have pairs at every hole, except at number 1.

Check whether the center is properly aligned. It’s simply a matter of pulling the cord to bring the center into place.

Secure the center firmly in place. We are going to create 4 sets of 4.

2:10

You pass the cord neatly underneath the center. 13 times — you can adjust the number as you prefer. At Sjamaan.nl, we like to use 13 times, representing the 13 months of the year.

3:17

Check and count carefully. We continue wrapping around the tension cords for aesthetic purposes, not because it is necessary. We do this 3 times, bringing the total to 16. This drum is based on 16 spokes.

Move to the opposite side. I went to the opposite side from underneath so the cord remains out of sight.

4:50

Repeat the same process you just did. Wrap 13 times around the 8 cords, and then do the same for the other tension cords.

6:00

After forming the loops, the end is in sight. It is important to secure the drum properly. You can create a raised grip for your hand by crossing the cords through the center.

6:50

For securing the end, you will need three tools: a screwdriver, a lighter, and scissors.

Insert the screwdriver through the crossing cord to create space for the knot underneath the handle.

Tie a knot on both sides. Pull it tight.

Time to cut the umbilical cord. Leave about 1.5 cm attached to the drum. Light it briefly and press it down on the underside using the screwdriver.

8:50

Tie cotton strips around the drum to hold the raised sections in place and prevent the “bottle cap” effect, so it doesn’t resemble a beer cap. Pull the cotton strips as tight as you can.

Let the drum dry slightly elevated from the surface so that air can circulate underneath.

The drum needs 24 hours to dry.

This is followed by a brief summary of the entire process.
